Grand Pacific Customs x Formation collection - JANUARY 2024
For those that find refuge in the ocean, the surf film reawakening of late has been another immersive experience. Recent premieres of the kind of Gonzo movies of the 70s have focused less on the performance and product and much more on the why and the spirited tales of the surfers themselves. The ocean and adjoining landscape playing characters as much as the surfers. MASH, followed hotly by Motel Hell, are just two movies touched by the directorial, cinematic and editing vision of the Illawarra's James Kates, with surf footage featuring Noa Deane, Craig Anderson and Shaun Manners. We took inspiration from James' vantage point of being in the water and looking at the immovable objects those waves crashed into and the sand banks that created those heavy slabs.
Formation is based on a series of photographs taken of the cathedral size rocky strata, and the dangerous ocean-etched outcrops underneath, from surf breaks starting at Burning Palms down to Gerringong, NSW. These were then layered to create a unique abstract artful print. This stretch of coastline, an hour south of Sydney, offers up over 100 breaks along the 100km grand pacific highway route. The terrain making for the best conditions regardless of swell direction and creating some of the most committed surfers with relentless options to paddle out and stare at the towering cliffs, razor points and the famous escarpment.
The collection launches with a tee in a shale beige colourway, with contrast abstract print graphic in storm grey across the back and a degraded plain 'G' logo with its sunrise swell lines on the front breast pocket position.

Grand Pacific Customs x Script Tee collection - November 2023
The script tee is a core classic within the street wear scene. Flipping the script into a more simplistic and minimalist style with a tone-on-tone version. A signature graphic that pays pay homage to its home state highway route, blended with a forgotten font surfaced in a garage-sale and found within a 1970s rare surf magazine, then finally customised into a washed vintage feel. Launched in a capsule collection of smoke hued tees for summer within our organic basics and minimal graphic tee collection.

Grand Pacific Customs x Organics Pack - November 2023
Grand Pacific launch a new organics pack for s/s 2023 global south summer with a range of core classic colours in a sharper pure and true black as a counterpoint to the usual washed-out hues. In addition to this three-pack of graphics-free, every day wearables, there has been added a fashion colour of the moment, smoke green.
The organic pack is certified and comes in the brand's standard slimmer classic fit for layering so the label encourages customers to size up for box fit. The brand's motif of the outsized hem label is the only reference to the collection origin to keep the look clean for minimalist or for when graphic tees won't cut it.

Grand Pacific Customs x Surf Film Premiere - November 2023
The surf film genre is experiencing a resurgence that defies the current digital branded content and harks back to the days when bolthole beach joints used to play refound 70s home movies on ancient TV screens behind the bar. We all have a stack of VHS and DVDs from analogue days, when the only way to get into the scene was to buy and swap copies of famous compilations of grainy Super 8 overlaid with psych rock. This is a nostalgia mixed with a longing to be in those moments. The new wave of surf movies gives us all that opportunity to be part of another ‘happening’.
A couple of Australians are leading the pack on the global film circuit, with a return to this cinematic style. Probably the most out-there being the Illawarra’s own James Kates, with his cohort of the coolest people in music as creative sidekicks to his vision. A musician himself, with a repertoire of past music and surf videos, plus a penchant for guerrilla projections on remarkable Illawarra landmarks, makes James a multi-faceted surf movie maverick of note.
